Cosmetic Tooth Bonding & Contouring
When teeth-whitening isn’t enough to improve your smile, it is likely because your teeth exhibit more than just teeth stains. Yet, in many cases, you can still enjoy a brighter, more beautiful smile without the need for extensive treatment, and while preserving a maximum amount of your healthy tooth structure.
Teeth that are chipped, lightly-cracked, oddly spaced, oddly-sized, misshapen, or more can often be corrected with a cosmetic bonding and/or contouring procedure. Bonding with tooth-colored composite resin can build up and improve a tooth’s structural appearance, while contouring can slightly reshape a tooth or smooth its rough, jagged, or protruding edges.
In the Office
After a personal consultation and examination, Dr. Chen will help you determine if tooth bonding and/or contouring are right for you. If your smile can be improved with whitening, or if your teeth require more involved treatment, then Dr. Chen will help you choose a more appropriate option.
To perform tooth bonding, Dr. Chen will match the resin to the exact color and shade of your dentition. The composite is then placed onto the tooth, sculpted to the desired shape and appearance, hardened, and polished for a strong, attractive finish. Bonding is a simple procedure and patients do not need anesthesia or dental sedation beforehand.
Tooth contouring is also a minor cosmetic procedure, but unlike bonding, the process involves sculpting the tooth’s outer enamel to reduce its size, or smooth or shape its surface. Using special, minimally-invasive equipment and techniques, Dr. Chen can contour one or more teeth to create a brand new smile while minimizing the amount of alterations to your tooth structure. Local anesthesia can reduce the risks of discomfort, and though patients typically do not need sedation, you may opt for it if you are particularly nervous or anxious about dental treatment.
